PTL maintains an Approved Supplier Database. To maintain ‘approved’ status, suppliers must demonstrate positive and improving environmental credentials.
PTL has invested in Chain of Custody systems and is committed to buying 3rd party verified stocks when available. The company is able to offer FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) and PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification schemes) through bespoke systems. We also hold a Forest Products Chain of Custody Certificate that allows the company to handle timbers sourced under various national certification schemes such as MTCC / MTCS (Malaysian Timber Council) and TFT (Tropical Forest Trust). PTL gained full Chain of Custody certification in 2003, being one of the first UK timber companies to do so.
The company performs due diligence on all purchases, certified and non-certified, by risk rating all materials using a risk management tool, the ‘RPP’. A key element of the RPP is to encourage the company’s suppliers towards continuous improvement.
PTL attempts to minimise waste wherever possible. The company is committed to the development of engineered timber components that can utilise ‘waste’ wood in the product core to reduce the quantity of top quality material required. This should lead to a greater utilisation of the log – reducing waste and forest impact. PTL encourage all supplier countries to perform the engineering process, thus providing value added to the supply country. The value of existing forest is increased as a result, making it less likely that the forest area will be cleared for alternative land use.
